To make a memorial or honorary gift by cash or check, please attach a note that includes the name of the person you wish to memorialize or honor. Because we notify the family or individual of your contribution, please also include the family contact name and address.
Stock or Securities Your contribution of long-term appreciated securities assists Jackson State University in meeting its financial and education goals, and relieves you from paying capital gains tax on those securities. It also entitles you to give to a charitable organization equal to the fair market value of the securities, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income for that year.
Gift Annuities The gift annuity agreement provides those who give cash, securities, real estate or personal property fixed annual payments for a specified period of time – usually for life. With a deferred gift annuity, the annual payments do not start when you make the gift, but begin at a later time specified by you.
Life Insurance You can make a gift of a whole or universal life insurance policy by naming Jackson State University the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of the policy. There are several ways to use life insurance as a charitable gift, such as contributing a paid-up policy that you no longer need; a policy that is not paid up, but you can take a deduction for the “cash surrender value”; fund a Charitable Remainder Unitrust for your spouse; or give appreciated property to Jackson State University and use the income tax savings to purchase life insurance for your family.
Charitable Remainder Trust There are two basic types of charitable remainder trusts, Unitrusts and Annuity Trusts. Both allow you to qualify for federal tax benefits and continue to receive income from your stock, cash or other assets. You give your assets to a trust, which are then invested, producing income for you – or another beneficiary – for either a fixed period of time or for your lifetime. At the end of the trust period, Jackson State University keeps all remaining assets. | | Matching Gifts Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. This means you would be recognized for the full amount of your own gift, plus any resulting employer match.
Payroll Deduction If you are an employee of Jackson State University, you are eligible to make charitable contributions via payroll deduction. A payroll deduction can be adjusted at any time, or stopped upon your request.
Contribute a Bequest Bequests are the most common form of a planned gift – which can be large or small – made through a donor’s will. Individuals may include Jackson State University for a specific dollar amount (called a “legacy”), a specific asset, or a percentage share of their estate. Donors can also name Jackson State University as the residual beneficiary of their estates after the payment of bequests to others.
Personal Property or Real Estate Jackson State University welcomes gifts of tangible property that further its educational endeavors, and which the University would otherwise have to purchase. Gifts of real estate can generate significant tax benefits for donors and eliminate problems that come with the settlement of estates. The gift can be for a fractional interest in the property or the entire property.
Naming Opportunities Naming opportunities at Jackson State University exist across all academic disciplines, in most buildings and among student programs. Donors at every level have an opportunity to support the University while honoring or memorializing themselves, mentors or loved ones. For specific naming opportunities, please contact Jackson State University.
