A History of Challenging Minds and Changing Lives The history of Jackson State University reaches back more than 125 years. The JSU story has become the very foundation of its strength and reputation as a culturally rich, diversified university. Jackson State is the only university in Mississippi’s capital city, solidly and purposefully based in a distinctly urban setting. One of America’s leading historically black universities, it is also historically Mississippi with a past that is indelibly linked to the history of the region. The institution represents the triumph of human persistence and the collective rewards of educating people against all odds – a story that touches all people. Since its founding in 1877, Jackson State has remained steadfast in its mission “to guide students in acquiring knowledge, understanding and appreciation for developing skills and attitude essential to general, liberal and professional education.” Generations later, the school’s momentum continues to grow thanks to the dedication of its students, faculty and the community it serves. In early 2000, Dr. Ronald Mason, Jr. took helm as president of the University. Since then, he has led the school into a period of growth and economic development, and an evolving movement to expand and heighten the University’s reputation as a leading academic institution. Jackson State has reorganized many of its schools and colleges, reached into the community to create a Jackson State-based technology cluster and initiated sweeping programs to increase economic and community development. |
